A Typical Satyananda Yoga Class
Satyananda Yoga uses its practices in a traditional and systematic way, advancing gradually through the different levels of our existence, starting with the physical body and moving progressively into increasingly subtle realms of experience. A typical class is 1.5 to 2 hours in duration and normally contains the following components:

Asana (yoga postures)
Asanas invigorate the body, improve health and flexibility, and remove energy blockages and tension. Classical yoga asanas are included in a class, building up to them very gently. As the student’s experience and capacity deepens, more complex and challenging practices are gradually introduced. In a Satyananda Yoga class, asanas are explored in a non-competitive atmosphere with an emphasis on awareness.

Pranayama (breathing techniques)
Breath work is the second major component of a class. The aim of pranayama is to awaken, balance and expand the prana (vital energy) in the body. Pranayama is also useful for inducing relaxation and calming the mind. Pranayama training traditionally begins with practices that increase breath sensitivity, capacity and control before advancing to classical pranayama techniques, which include a variety of tranquillising and vitalising practices.
Mudras (yogic gestures) and bandhas (energy locks) may also be included in more advanced courses. These more subtle practices are often used in conjunction with pranayama techniques to further deepen and enhance the flow of prana.

Satyananda Yoga Nidra®
Yoga nidra is a simple guided relaxation and meditation technique experienced lying down, and is often the favourite practice of yoga students. Yoga nidra is unique to the Satyananda tradition, and is originally derived from an ancient tantric practice known as nyasa. It involves a systematic relaxation and purification at the physical, mental and emotional levels. Yoga nidra can easily deepen into a blissful experience where the body sleeps but the awareness remains active as it descends through the layers of the mind. Yoga nidra has many associated health benefits and is used widely to relieve stress, tension, anxiety and insomnia.

Meditation
In the Satyananda Yoga system, there are a variety of meditation techniques that will aid towards introverting the awareness and accessing deeper realms of the mind. According to the majority of yoga schools, one must master the preliminary stages of asana and pranayama before being ready to proceed with meditation. The pre-meditative group of asanas, widely taught in Satyananda Yoga classes, contains excellent practices to prepare the body for sitting comfortably in classical meditation postures. Meditation techniques are taught systematically, and over a course of sessions may cover body stillness, breath awareness, inner observation and mantra (sound vibration). The regular practice of meditation will expand the awareness and bring the practitioner many benefits, including enhanced concentration, reduced stress and a sense of calm amidst the ups and downs of daily life.
